Custom Knife Manufacturer: Your Design, Logo and Handle, Made by Hand

Custom knives are the speciality of the makers in our network in Wazirabad, a Punjab city known for cutlery and blade-making. They make hunting, skinner, Bowie, kukri, tanto and kitchen knives to your drawing, sample or brief, in Damascus, carbon or stainless steel, with the handle, guard, sheath and branding you choose. This page explains what can be customised, how an order works from sample to shipment, and what to check about import rules.

Custom handmade Damascus knives: tanto with finger ring, cleaver with red wood handle and ram horn hunting knife

The short answer

You can order custom handmade knives and knife sets with your own design, handle material and colours, engraving or logo, leather sheath and packaging, from small sample runs to bulk orders. Send a drawing or a reference knife with your quantity and destination, approve a sample in writing, then place the full order. Knife and animal-material import rules differ by country, so confirm them with your importer first.

What you can customise

  • Blade pattern and shape. Hunting, drop-point, skinner, gut-hook, Bowie, kukri, tanto, fillet, chef, cleaver and utility shapes, or your own drawing.
  • Steel and pattern. Damascus (with a choice of pattern), hand-forged carbon steel with a black or hammered finish, or stainless steel.
  • Handle material and colour. Stag antler, ram or buffalo horn, bone, walnut, rosewood or olive wood, stabilised and dyed wood in your colours, micarta and resin, with spacer lines and inlays.
  • Guard, bolster and pommel. Brass, steel or Damascus, with lanyard holes, finger rings and finger grooves where wanted.
  • Leather sheath. Handmade stitched leather in your colour, with tooling, embossing, lacing, snap strap or belt loop, and your logo stamped on it.
  • Engraving and logo. Your name, logo or reference number on the blade, handle or sheath, and branded packaging.
  • Sets and rolls. Matching knife sets with a leather roll or gift box.

How a custom knife order works

  • 1. Brief. Send a drawing, photos or a reference knife, the steel and handle you want, the quantity and your destination country.
  • 2. Quotes. We ask suitable makers in our network and collect written quotes with the price per knife, the minimum order, the sample cost and the lead time.
  • 3. Sample. A pre-production sample is made. You check the blade, handle, sheath and markings and approve it in writing.
  • 4. Production. The makers produce the full order to the approved sample, with the agreed packaging.
  • 5. Inspection and shipping. We can arrange an independent inspection before shipment, and help with the paperwork for a freight forwarder that carries knives.

Handmade knives vary slightly, and natural handle materials like horn and wood never match exactly. Agree the acceptable difference from the sample before production starts.

Handle materials and colours

The handle is where most custom orders differ. Makers combine materials and colours, so you can match a brand colour, a hunting theme or a flag.

HandleGood to know
Stag antler and hornNatural look, each piece different. Check the import rules for animal materials in your country.
BonePale, smooth and often used on skinning knives. Natural material, so the same import note applies.
Walnut, rosewood, olive woodNatural wood with visible grain. Finish and oiling affect how it ages.
Stabilised and dyed woodWood treated and coloured in blue, red, green or custom colours, with spacer lines. The best choice for matching brand colours.
Micarta and resinSynthetic, hard-wearing and consistent from piece to piece, which suits large orders.

Custom kitchen knives and chef sets

Makers also produce chef knives, cleavers, santoku and utility knives, singly or as a matched set with a leather roll. A set can have matching handles, a brass bolster and a small inlay medallion, in Damascus or in hand-forged carbon steel.

  • Damascus kitchen knives. Each blade has its own pattern. Ask whether a set has to match closely, which affects the price.
  • Hand-forged carbon steel. A black or hammered finish. Carbon steel needs drying and oiling after use, so include care instructions in your packaging.
  • Leather knife rolls. Rolls with pockets for each knife, straps and a carrying handle.

Engraved knives, gifts and corporate orders

Engraved and personalised knives are a common bulk order for gift companies, wedding and groomsmen sets, outdoor brands, clubs and corporate gifts. Makers can engrave a name, logo or date on the blade, the handle or the sheath, and pack each knife in your box or gift tube.

  • Brand and logo. Send the artwork as a vector file. Ask how the logo will be applied and how long it lasts.
  • Name engraving. Individual names per knife need a clear list and a higher minimum for the engraving work.
  • Packaging. Gift boxes, leather rolls and printed boxes. Ask what is included in the unit price.

Swords, daggers and axes on request

Some makers in our network also hand-forge swords, daggers and axes. These are made to order and are subject to stricter import rules than most knives in many countries. Tell us what you need and the destination, and we will ask whether a maker can supply it and what the importer must arrange.

Import rules and shipping: check before you order

Knives are regulated in many countries, and the rules differ widely. Some places restrict blade length, blade type, sawback or serrated edges, or sale to minors, and couriers may refuse knives. This is general information, not legal advice. Check the rules for your own market with your importer or customs broker before you place an order.

  • Natural handle materials. Antler, horn and bone handles can be treated as animal or wildlife products on import, may need documents or inspection, and are restricted in some countries. Choose wood or resin if your market is strict.
  • Knife type. The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, parts of the EU and some US states restrict certain knives and swords. Confirm that the style you order can be imported and sold.
  • Leather and wood. Some countries inspect leather and wooden items for biosecurity. Ask the maker to list all materials in writing.
  • Freight. Many couriers do not carry knives. Use a forwarder that handles knives, by sea or air.

Minimum order, samples and lead time

Minimum orders are usually set per pattern, and are higher for new custom designs and engraved work. Lead times depend on the number of knives, the materials and the amount of hand finishing. Ask each maker for a written quote that states the price per knife, the sample cost and time, the minimum order, the lead time and what packaging is included. Always approve a sample before production.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a knife to my own drawing or sample?

Yes. Send a drawing, photos or a reference knife with the steel, handle and sheath you want. Makers produce a pre-production sample first, which you approve in writing before the full order.

Can you put my logo or name on the knives?

Yes. Makers can engrave or mark your logo or name on the blade, the handle or the sheath, and pack the knives in your own boxes. Send the artwork as a vector file and ask how the marking is done.

What is the minimum order for custom knives?

It depends on the maker, the pattern and how custom the knife is. New designs and engraved work usually have a higher minimum than standard patterns. Ask for a written quote that states it.

Can I order a sample before a large order?

Yes, and you should. Check the steel, finish, handle fit, sheath and markings on a sample, approve it in writing and then place the larger order.

Can I choose the handle colour?

Yes. Stabilised and dyed wood can be made in your colours, with spacer lines and inlays. Natural materials such as horn, bone and wood vary from piece to piece.

Do you make custom kitchen knives and chef sets?

Yes. Makers produce chef knives, cleavers and matched sets in Damascus and hand-forged carbon steel, with a leather knife roll. Ask whether a set has to match closely.

Do you make swords, daggers or axes?

Some makers in our network do, to order. They are subject to stricter import rules in many countries, so tell us what you need and the destination and we will ask whether a maker can supply it.

Can custom knives be shipped to the US, UK, Canada and Australia?

Often yes, but knife laws and courier rules differ by country, state and knife type, and natural handle materials can be restricted. Check with your importer or customs broker first. This is general information, not legal advice.
