Rice Exporters in Pakistan: How to Source Basmati and Non-Basmati Rice

The short answer

You can source basmati and non-basmati rice from Pakistani exporters in bulk bags or retail packs, including under your own brand. State the variety, the grain length, the broken percentage, the crop year and the packing, and ask for a sample and a laboratory report before you place a container order.

What you can source

  • Basmati rice. Long-grain aromatic rice, sold as raw white, sella (parboiled) and steam grades.
  • Non-basmati long grain. Rice such as the IRRI varieties, sold white or parboiled for large-volume buyers.
  • Brown and other specialty rice. Offered by some exporters on request.
  • Retail and private label packs. Bags and boxes in your pack sizes with your brand.
  • Bulk supply. Sacks and jumbo bags loaded into containers.

What to specify in your request

Two quotes for rice are only comparable when the specification is the same. Give the exporter these details.

Documents and compliance

Food rules differ by country. These are general pointers, so confirm the requirements with your importer.

  • Laboratory report. Analysis for moisture, broken grains and any limits your market sets for contaminants such as pesticide residue.
  • Phytosanitary certificate. Often required to import rice. The exporter arranges it with the authority in Pakistan.
  • Certificate of origin. Needed for customs and for some trade agreements.
  • Food-safety certification. Some buyers ask for HACCP, ISO 22000 or a retailer standard. Ask what the exporter holds and check that it is current.
  • Labelling. Retail packs must carry the details your market requires.

Minimum order, samples and shipping

Rice is usually priced per tonne and shipped by the container. Minimum orders depend on the exporter and the pack. Ask for a sample of the exact grade and cook it to check aroma, grain length and texture. Then ask each exporter for a written quote that states the price per tonne, the Incoterm (for example FOB Karachi or CIF your port), the packing, the payment terms and the shipment lead time.

We can help you send the same brief to several exporters, compare quotes, arrange samples and book an independent inspection before shipment. You pay the supplier directly.

Frequently asked questions

Which Pakistani rice varieties can I buy?

Pakistan exports basmati rice (white, sella and steam) and non-basmati long grain varieties. Tell us the variety and grade you need and we will match exporters.

What is the minimum order for rice?

It depends on the exporter and the pack. Many exporters work in container loads, but some supply smaller quantities. Ask each exporter for a written quote that states the minimum order.

Can I buy rice under my own brand?

Yes. Many exporters pack rice in retail bags and boxes with your label. Send your artwork and pack sizes with your request.

What documents come with a rice shipment?

Typically a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and a phytosanitary certificate, plus a laboratory report if your market asks for one. Confirm the exact list with your importer.

What does broken percentage mean?

It is the share of grains in the sample that are broken. A lower percentage means higher-quality rice and usually a higher price. Always put it in your specification.

What does FOB or CIF mean in a rice quote?

They are Incoterms. FOB means the price covers the goods up to loading onto the ship at the Pakistani port. CIF also covers sea freight and insurance up to your port. Compare quotes only on the same Incoterm.

Can I order a sample first?

Yes, and we recommend it. Cook the sample and check aroma, grain length and texture, and test it if your market requires. We can help arrange samples.
