
Imports and Exports of Pakistan
Pakistan’s trade economy depends on industries with a well-integrated agriculture sector and a growing services sector. Due to agrarian economy, the exports are agro-based mainly textile & leather goods. It is placed among the top emerging and fast growth-leading economies of the world. Pakistan has bilateral and multilateral trade agreements with several nations and international organizations. It is part of the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement, the China–Pakistan Free Trade Agreement and a member of the World Trade Organization.
Pakistan has recorded its highest export of US$25.1 billion in the FY 2013-14. Export potential suggests that Pakistan has untapped export of potential of $12.2b and double its exports within a year due to huge potential in home textile products, apparels, leather goods, cereals and others. Its exports target was $20b in 2009-2010 and Pakistan’s exports stands at $29b as of April 2015.
Pakistan's exports continue to be dominated by cotton textiles, apparel textiles, readymade garments, carpets, rugs. Textile sector covers around 70% of Pakistan’s exports. In 2018, Pakistan exported mostly i.e. knitwear (13.2% of total exports), apparel textile and clothing accessories (11.3%), bed wear (10.4%); cotton fabrics (9.4%).
Pakistan is a net food exporter of rice, cotton, fish, fruits (especially Oranges and Mangoes), and vegetables. It is Asia's largest camel market, second-largest apricot and ghee market and third-largest cotton, onion and milk market. Pakistan also exports livestock, meat, chicken, powered milk, wheat, seafood (especially shrimp/prawns), vegetables, processed food items. In the year of 2018/19 Pakistan has exported 1.7 million tons of wheat and 4.0 million tons of rice by Oct 2019.
Pakistan produces and exports construction materials cement, tiles, marbles, cements to Asia, the Middle East and started exporting to India to fill its shortage in Aug 2017.
Pakistan exports leather goods, veterinary surgical supplies, sports, goods (renowned for footballs/soccer balls), Pakistan manufacturers about 60% of the footballs of the world. It is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of surgical instruments. Pakistan exports electrical appliances, software, Pakistani-assembled Suzukis (to Afghanistan and other countries), defense equipment (submarines, tanks, radars), salt, onyx, engineering goods, and many other items. Pakistan also exports steel, tobacco, chemicals, machinery, food processing.
Pakistan’s imports were recorded US$60.3b from all over the world in 2018, it was up by 26.9% since 2014. Imports include mineral fuels, oils, machinery, electrical & electronics goods, iron & steel, organic chemicals, vehicles, plastics, fertilizers, pharmaceutical products, oils & seeds, fats, coffee, tea, rubbers, cotton etc.
